How to Store Sarees at Home

Saree storage should follow the textile maker’s or conservator’s guidance for the exact fibre, dyes, embellishment, age, value, and local climate.

Clean Before Storage

Follow the care label or professional cleaning guidance. Store only when the textile is fully dry and free of residues that may cause damage.

Use the Recommended Fold or Support

Folding, rolling, interleaving, or hanging may be appropriate for different textiles. Avoid a universal method for silk, cotton, zari, embroidery, or valuable pieces.

Choose an Appropriate Enclosure

Evaluate enclosure material, dimensions, closures, cleanliness, ventilation, light exposure, pests, and climate. Do not assume a non-woven or plastic enclosure controls moisture or protects every textile.

Separate Sensitive Elements

Prevent rough embellishments, metal threads, dyes, or fasteners from rubbing adjacent textiles. Use archival or textile-safe materials when advised for valuable pieces.

Store in a Suitable Location

Follow guidance on temperature, humidity, light, dust, pests, stacking, and weight. Keep items away from known leaks and inspect the storage furniture.

Inspect Periodically

Check for moisture, odour, staining, colour transfer, pests, creasing, and enclosure damage. Seek specialist advice for valuable or damaged textiles.
